Meet the Board 

Peter Walpole Chartered Insurer, FIRM, FIoD, FCMI

Non-Executive Chairman

Peter is the founder of Insurance Corporation which he established in 1982 with share capital of £500,000; on his retirement as Managing Director in 2007, the value of the Corporation was estimated at £110 million. Over the years Peter has and continues to serve many diverse business, political and charitable organisations as president, chairman or board/committee member. He is actively involved in the off-shore financial services sector and in the wider world is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Insurers and a Freeman of the City of London. On a personal note, Peter is married to Jean and they have four children who are living and working in Hong Kong, Guernsey, Perth Western Australia and San Francisco.

 
 
 

Jon Hancock

Non-Executive Director

Jon is Managing Director of RSA UK Commercial, a position he has held since July 2011, and, as such, is responsible for leading RSA UK's commercial business segment. Jon started work for RSA in 1990 in Liverpool as a Marine underwriter. After rising through the ranks to become the underwriting and development manager for the North, he moved out to Singapore to head up RSA commercial underwriting operations for five years, delivering a profitable and sustainable portfolio of insurance business throughout the Asian region. Following this, Jon went on to become CEO of RSA Asia Middle East operations where he oversaw the acquisition and integration of Al Ahlia Insurance – then the Middle East’s 3rd largest insurer. Having achieved great success abroad, Jon decided to return to the UK to take up his current role as Commercial’s Managing director. Jon is a lifelong Liverpool FC supporter and has 2 children, Emma,18, and Sam, 16.

 
 
 

Tara Kneafsey B.Sc, M. Phil

Non-Executive Director

Tara is Shareholder representative on the Board and has  been in the role as Director SME & Volume Business, RSA UK Commercial, since December 2010. She is responsible for micro, small and medium insurance business across the UK. Prior to this role she was appointed Chief Executive Officer of RSA's business in Latvia in April 2008 and spent almost 3 years in Riga before returning to the UK. She has held a number of other roles, largely within the Finance division of RSA since joining the insurer in 2006. Prior to this, Tara spent the early years of her career at Arthur Andersen, followed by Ernst and Young.

 
 
 

John Langlois OBE, C.Dir, C.Arb. LL.B (Hons)

Non-Executive Director

John has served on the Board since the Company was founded in 1982. He is an Advocate of the Royal Court of Guernsey, a Chartered Director and a Chartered Arbitrator. He was Senior Partner of Advocates Carey Langlois (now Carey Olsen) for 27 years and served as a Deputy and Conseiller in the States of Guernsey for 24 years for which he was appointed OBE in the 2005 New Year Honours List.

 
 
 

Paul Masterton

Non-Executive Director

Paul, a Jersey resident, joined the Board in 2009. He is Chief Executive of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, a role which he took up in May 2008 following a distinguished business career.  Prior to this Paul was the president of the European arm of a major public US printing and communications company, RR Donnelley and has extensive international experience in Europe, North America, where he worked for 14 years, and in Asia. Durrell is a leading international conservation charity with a reputation for recovering species from the edge of extinction and a widely respected pioneering approach to conservation.   Durrell's Jersey headquarters includes a wild life park, a centre of excellence for animal husbandry and an International Training Centre for conservation.  Durrell also manages over 40 projects in 15 countries. Paul also serves on the boards of Allied Irish Banks International and Mauritius Wildlife Fund. Paul moved to Jersey in 2003, from the United States, together with his
wife Michele and their two daughters.

 
 
 

Glyn Smith FCII, MBA

Managing Director

During an insurance career which began in 1977, Glyn worked for Commercial Union for 10 years, as a broker for 2 years and as a captive manager for 8 years. He was Operations & Claims Manager for Insurance Corporation during an 11 year period until 2001. After leaving Insurance Corporation to manage captives, initially for HSBC and then Heath Lambert, Glyn rejoined Insurance Corporation in late 2009 as Managing Director. He is married to Julie and has two grown up children, Ollie and Georgia. In his private life, Glyn is a keen sportsman and is actively involved in running the local branch of Smile4Wessex, a charity which raises money for the Wessex Neurological Centre at Southampton General Hospital.
