  • Catel de Lecq - 4 years on

     01/02/2012

Since 2008, Insurance Corporation has supported the Catel de Lecq (on Jersey's north coast) project in Jersey. A project co-ordinated by States of Jersey Department of the Environment (on Jersey's north coast) and funded through a partnership initiative with the Insurance Corporation of the Channel Islands.

The site is small in size but great in historic significance. It incorporates several disused agricultural fields, a Napoleonic Fort and an "earthwork" feature thought to be of Iron Age construction with later additions possibly medieval and certainly some from the Occupation.

  • 2011 Winners - ADHD and Sleep Apnoea

Both will receive funding from this year's Healthcare Bursary 03/11/2011

The 2011 Insurance Corporation Healthcare Bursary has, this year, awarded two prizes to two very different projects.

Selected from a shortlist of five, the first prize of £2,000 went to clinical nurse practitioners, Joe Hind and Paul Fisher, for their plans to create an interactive board game for people with ADHD.

Joe and Paul have designed a board game that will help families to understand and develop skills around managing ADHD. The game will encompass areas of parent training, group work, sibling work, psychotherapy, problem solving and communication. If a success it is hoped to roll out a full version of the game for use at schools, clubs and perhaps for health professionals off-island.

The runner-up spot and £1,000 went to Rebecca Sherrington with her proposal to create a website to aid sleep apnoea sufferers. Rebecca, a clinical nurse specialist in respiratory medicine, looks after those patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, a condition that causes interruptions in breathing during sleep. The funds will go towards creating a website that will provide local advice from patients and nurses on sleep apnoea - a resource that is currently lacking.

'This year marks the 21st anniversary of the healthcare bursary, and after all these years, I continue to be delighted at the diversity of entries we receive from staff across HSSD,' said Insurance Corporation chairman and founder of the bursary, Peter Walpole.

'This year we decided to split the prize money which means we have been able to assist two projects which will bring increased benefits to the local community in two very different areas of healthcare.'

2011 Jersey award winners announced 21/06/2011

National Trust have walked away with the top prize in this year's Insurance Conservation Awards. The organisation wins £2,000 to help continue the restoration and management of ponds at La Mielle des Morville.

Insurance Corporation chairman and one of the judges, Peter Walpole said that the standard of entrants was exceptionally high.

"My fellow judges and I found it very difficult to decide on a winner this year as there are so many worthy projects.  We feel that La Mielle des Morville nosed ahead because of its community focus.  This precious area of land is also a valuable breeding ground for certain species of bird."

This year is the 21st anniversary of the competition in the Channel Islands and the judges decided to present a special award to the Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group.

  • Fresh new look for island-favourite competition

    2011 Conservation Awards 29/03/2011

Environmentalists and eco-friendly gardeners have had the chance once again to win £ 2,000 with this year's 2011 Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards.  The event, which is open to any private individual, club, company or organisation and to any educational institution too.

Congratulations to Le Chemin du Trésor, Guernsey

A woodland and meadow walk on the land below St Peter's Church has won this year's Guernsey Award.  The natural space at the heart of the parish was overgrown, choked and untended until it was rediscovered, regenerated and reopened in 2009.

"We were greatly impressed," says chairman of Insurance Corporation and founder of the competition, Peter Walpole.  "What particularly pleased us was the degree of community involvement, it really is charming oasis hidden away to be discovered by islanders and natural wildlife."

Close contest for top Guernsey school

After a close contest in this year's competition, the top school was awarded to Forest Primary School who win £ 1,000 spread over three years to further develop their conservation garden while the special 21st anniversary prize of £500 went to Le Murier School.  Each school that enters also received a bird box and fruit tree courtesy of Earlswood Nursery Garden Centre.

  • Healthcare Bursary 2010

    2010 Bursary Winners announced 30/11/2010

The Insurance Corporation Healthcare Bursary awards are annually held and offer the opportunity for Health and Social Care professionals to expand their skills and improve healthcare in the Bailiwick.  A bursary of £ 3,000 is awarded to fund the winning project.

Every year a variety of projects are seen but unfortunately there is only one prize.

HSSD chief officer, Mark Cooke, applauds those that have entered, "In these times of budget cuts, projects such as these are invaluable and I'm truly grateful for the staff who work outside of their normal hours to submit their ideas and bring even more to their areas of expertise."

2010 winner - 'The Decider' project

Cognitive behavioural psychotherapists Carol Vivyan and Michelle Ayres have won this year's Bursary for 'The Decider', which is currently used as a tool for adult mental health therapies.

'The Decider' (based on a more creative approach to therapy, including the use of music and visuals that prompt a positive change in behaviour) is of great use for the dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), which is used to treat adults with border personality disorder.  The bursary would be used to develop 'The Decider' further into a training manual that could be used by other clinicians, making DBT more accessible to clients.

Insurance Corporation chairman Peter Walpole said:  "The winning entry is not an area of mental health that the majority of islanders would be familiar with but it is an important tool for therapists and one that sees great results.  It is wonderful to be able to support a project like this that will have real benefits to the mental health service."
